Writing Health-Our Hands

I found this drafted blog post (below) lurking in my folder. Not sure when I wrote it, but it was some time ago. The concept of the post is just as relevant now, as it was then.

If we are truly writing as much as we'd all hope to, then we need to pay attention to the health of our all-important-tools - - our hands. We need to manage our workspace, to ensure our hands are not prone to injury, and to keep ourselves writing for a long time. I unfortunately have not been paying attention to this fact and have found my right hand, in particular, hurting. Is it carpal tunnel syndrome -- don't know. But I've put my computer whiz husband to the task and he is working on getting me setup with a docking station that will move my laptop off the corner of my desk allowing me to slip-in a full sized ergonomic keyboard.

I want to ensure my hands will be healthy enough to write many novels into the future.

I am happy to report that I no longer have the pain in my hand, so the adjustments worked. Still, I wanted to share. Keep those hands healthy!

Book Review - 1225 Christmas Tree Lane

1225 Christmas Tree Lane (Cedar Cove) By: Debbie Macomber

I was curious – that’s the reason I picked up this book. I had never read a Debbie Macomber book, and yet I am on her mailing list – funny, right. Debbie Macomber has a huge fan base. She is a very prolific writer, and I admire her clean, clear, concise and from the heart marketing campaigns.

So what did I think of the book? I liked it! I can understand why Debbie Macomber has so many fans. 1225 Christmas Tree Lane was poignant, and it read like a literary soap opera. The characters were engaging, and believe me there are a lot of characters. Most of the book revolves around simple storylines of each of the characters but they are all tied in to the main character, Beth Morehouse, and orphaned puppies in need of homes. It’s a feel good book, best described as a good “beach read”.

NEA: Reading Patterns of Children, Teenagers, & Adults

This is interesting...I found it while searching online for supporting research to support several planned iniatives for book marketing for 2012. This research should be required reading for authors, publishers, educators, etc. The information is not super current -- the report was issued November 2007 -- but it shows important trends in reading patterns of children, teenagers, & adults.

How am I using the information? I'm using it to fine-tune marketing targets - instead of trying to sell to ALL teenagers, this report is steering me in a direction that will target "reading teens" specifically; it's pushing me to create the best Return On Investment (ROI). Instead of following a blanket marketing approach, I want to find places where "reading teens" might frequent, and market to them specifically.

Here's an overview of the report, as outlined on the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) website.

This report is a new and comprehensive analysis of reading patterns of children, teenagers, and adults in the United States. To Read or Not To Read assembled data on reading trends from more than 40 sources, including federal agencies, universities, foundations, and associations. The compendium expands the investigation of the NEA's landmark 2004 report, Reading at Risk, and reveals recent declines in voluntary reading and test scores alike, exposing trends that have severe consequences for American society. ABNA 2012 - I'm in!

I've been saying it for years...I'm going to send in an entry to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA). Well, I finally did it. There was some feverish work at the end to complete last minute edits, and fine-tune my query, all the while I was hoping to make the deadline. I was worried that the contest might fill-up before I was done. But no, I made it. Yippee!

Now the lengthy process begins. The waiting and the cuts. I hate waiting. I hate cuts. I'm trying to quell the urge to keep tweaking the manuscript. It's times like these that I wish I had a magic timepiece that would allow me to jump ahead...just to find out the results...did I make it to the next round, or not.

Time to distract myself, and move on to other projects so I'll avoid last minute neurotic edits. So it's on to drafting the next book (yay!), and developing my marketing plan (super-yay!)...and waiting.

Book Review - The Road

Book Review - The Road
by Cormac McCarthy

The Road…wow, what an amazing book. It is written so simply and yet it draws you in. You can feel the setting, feel the anguish of the characters, and it’s a quick read too. No wonder this book is a classic. I found myself highlighting so many parts as I read in my Kindle that when I went back over my notes there were six pages of highlights!

The Road is set in a post-apocalyptic world where life is all about survival. People have become an endangered species, hunted even by other humans. There are no animals and very little else left to scavenge for survival. The main character is a nameless father and his son who are on the move, searching for anything that will help them survive even one more day. They journey to an unknown destination with very little hope of finding anything better. The son has grown up knowing this emaciated world, and when his father talks of things the way they used to be, it is as if he is making up stories, fairy-tales.

This story will forever occupy a part of me. Haunting, enduring, and still somehow very beautiful.

2012 - Going to be Amazing

Do you guys feel it? I feel it. 2012 is going to be an AMAZING year! So what do you have planned to accomplish this year? New Year's resolutions were flying all over the internet the first week of January. They started dwindling last week, and now the third week in January and they're nearly non-existent. So have you lost focus on your goals for the year already? I hope not.

Now is the time to review your list. Which goals/resolutions still seem realistic, and which ones were more pie-in-the-sky pipe-dreams? Narrow the list to 1-3 that you think will be the real items you want to go after this year. And then right down the steps that you need to accomplish to get it done, distribute those tasks to the weeks/months in which you want to get them done.

Goals are best accomplished when broken down into smaller, more attainable steps.

2012 can be your year. 2012 WILL be your year...if you just plan for it and pursue it with blinders on.

I believe in you. Do you? Believe in yourself.

How To Write A Book Marketing Plan

It's not enough for an author to just write and rewrite a book. That's only the beginning of that book's life. To nurture that book's life (read: let readers know its exists), the writer also has to establishing a platform, build a fan base and get one's name out there in the literary world -- before the book hits the virtual bookshelves, or even tangible bookshelves. Authors also have to know how to plug in their books as well. This is where some self-published authors go wrong.

Authors have to be willing to pound the pavement to various locations for personal appearances, make a flurry of phone calls to book such events and use the power of the Internet (I especially recommend Facebook and Twitter of course; however, also check out blogging sites like WordPress, a FeedBurner account to help deliver your blog to the masses, GoodReads, and LinkedIn to network with other writers, editors and publishers). Warding Off Reality is still in its pre-production phase (under publication of my imprint Heathermoors Books), but I'm already letting people know via my blog, Facebook and Twitter about it. I even set up the book's website, http://www.wardingoffreality.wordpress.com/.

Publicity is the name of the game no matter what product or service anyone offers. Notice how even entertainers, including A-listers like Tom Hanks, Will Smith and Meryl Streep, have to do the rounds of the media circuit before their movies come out.

As a soon--to-be self-published novelist, I'm willing to work hard and do what it'll take to make my novel a success. Are you?

How to Write a Book Marketing Plan

I’m sure you’re not too surprised to find out that your work as a self published author doesn’t end when the presses finally begin –actually, some of the most important work you’ll do to make your book sell STARTS now (if not a bit earlier…)

How often have you heard other self published authors lament their lack of sales? All too often, I’m sure – and all too often, good planning and a smart strategy could have changed those stories.

A sound and sensible book marketing plan is just as important as the writing, design, and publication itself – no matter how wonderful your book might be, it won’t sell itself…and it’s highly unlikely for a new author’s (and even many well seasoned ones’) book to jump off bookstore shelves without some help. Remember, most bookstores have about 8,000 other titles competing for the consumer’s attention right next to one another!

Your book marketing plan should be designed to identify the revenue streams you plan to tap into. This document should be an outline of how you will achieve your income or sales goals, and it should identify in detail the market you’re targeting.

Building a book marketing plan.

Everyone knows a book won’t sell itself, Right? Surprisingly, many authors DON’T fully grasp this fact until it’s too late – and they are disappointed with their sales performance. Every book needs some sort of marketing plan – something that sets your expectations and creates achievable goals that you can pursue in an orderly fashion.

But, how do you create a marketing plan for your book? There is a ton of great free software, and even more that you can spend lots of money on, that all help you create a marketing plan for selling your book. However, before you spend a lot of time and money downloading software, open up your trusty word processor and follow me…

Chapter One – Who will buy your book?

The secret to sales success is to target your marketing as directly as possible to your potential reader – and have it be someone who is reachable.

“Everyone will want to read my book!” Sorry, but that doesn’t work. Even the absolute best selling books – that sell 2 or 3 million copies in a year – only penetrate about 3% of the reading population. Sales success for your book will be driven by defining a very clear picture of who is interested in your book.

They must be identifiable: Make a list! Which groups would be interested in your book? Why? Who is next? Why should they need or want your book? (remember this – someone is more likely to buy something they NEED before something they WANT)

Now – narrow it down even more. Find a unique angle about your book – and don’t try and be everything to everyone, because you can’t – instead target 100% of a specific part!

Chapter Two – What is your definition of success for your book? What is your GOAL?

Some authors write for themselves and their families only – they don’t dream of their books as bestsellers in the marketplace. Some authors write for a very specific personal need to tell their story. Some have unique insight into very specific topics. Many have dreams of seeing their books in the front of Barnes & Noble. Each author is different, but you MUST decide what your real definition of success happens to be. We don’t want to pursue a goal that may not be what you actually feel is important.

Chapter Three – Objectives, Plans and Actions

Everything needs to start with a GOAL – and that is what you outlined in Chapter Two. Everything you do for your book should be in support of this goal.

Objectives- these are the steps you take to achieve your GOAL – for example, if your goal is to sell 5,000 books, then you need to identify some OBJECTIVES as the “steps” to achieving your goal. Just like your GOAL – make sure your Objectives are reasonable, and something that you can achieve. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to confuse WANTING to do something to achieve a goal with being ABLE to achieve a goal – make sure you possess the necessary skills to do the things on your list. Perhaps my OBJECTIVES list would look like this:

1.Set up personal events to promote my book – book signings, seminars, radio interviews, etc.

2.Secure reviews from print resources.

3.Identify online resources for promotion of my book

4.Identify non-retail opportunities for book sales.

5.Create outbound awareness campaign of me, the author, as an expert in my field

Plans – your PLANS outline the needed steps to get your OBJECTIVES moving, and they begin to suggest “to do lists” and measurable actions. For example, one of my Objectives is to set up personal events to promote my book. So, my plan section might look like this:

•Objective:Personal Appearances:

•Plans:

i. Set up one book signing per week at local outlets

ii. Set up two seminars on book marketing in 1st quarter

iii. Conduct one radio interview per month over the coming year

Actions- these are the details of each PLAN- and, as the saying goes, “the devil is in the details”. This is where most marketing plans fail – you must have a coherent and workable set of “actions” to achieve each plan, that then lead to each objective – and, eventually, achieves your ultimate goal. If you can’t produce a reasonable set of “actions” for achieving each plan, then scrap the plan and start over. Here is my “Action” list for the Objective / Plans above:

•Objective: Personal Appearances:

•Plan: Set up one book signing per week at local bookstores

ACTIONS:

• Call B&N at Keystone– get Events Coord. name – make appt. to visit and present book signing idea. BRING BOOK!! Mary knows Mgr. – get intro?

• Books-A-Million Mgr. – drop off book – and mention reading / seminar on mktg.

• Contact library for presentations on self-pub. Monthly event?

As you can see, it really is all about breaking your marketing efforts down in to small enough pieces to be A) understandable, B) achievable and C) measurable.

Marketing & publicity is a long-term, consistent and concerted effort. It never ever happens overnight, even though it may seem to for some people.

Chapter Four – Create a reasonable timeline and budget

All of us have finite amounts of time, energy and money. Marketing can eat up all three very quickly, leaving you alone, exhausted and broke. The game is to pace yourself and resources so that you can keep the effort moving along. This is where your planning in Chapter Three works its magic. Without looking at the “big picture,” most of us would never know how much of our precious resources should be devoted to each aspect of the game. Organization and prioritizing are the most important parts of the process – and you may find yourself returning to “Chapter Three” and rewriting sections of your plan.

Here are some monetary expenses you may expect to incur in your marketing plan:

1. Sample Books – do you plan on sending them out or dropping them off?

2. Marketing materials – posters, flyers, postcards, etc.

3. Press release writing and distribution

4. Advertising – sponsored search, links, banners, print

5. Web site design and shopping cart creation

6. Direct mail opportunities

A quick note on samples – I don’t believe in sending out books blindly – it’s too expensive and not effective. If a potential resource is interested in your book, they’ll ask for it (as long as you’ve written a good press release).

Chapter Five – Creating a brand with your book marketing plan

Think about this. In many cases you, not your book, are really the “brand”. Books can occasionally be seen as a commodity. “Experts” who can be interviewed on a topic are often far more valuable. Your book is your calling card, and ultimately the way you will profit from your expertise, but many times it’s YOU, the expert, that is the selling point!

Use your marketing plan to push you as the primary product, building a brand around what you know and your “mystique” as an author. Also, don’t forget to let us know your plans! If you and your book are “tied” as a brand, let us help you use your book to increase your credibility and awareness. At least have us add your web site in several places in the book – even on the cover. Letting us in on your marketing plans can allow us time to help you create the best possible product.

Book Review - Bitten by R.L. Stine

Bitten follows twin sisters, Destiny & Livvy, as they return home from summer camp only to discover that vampires are invading their small town. And they are smack-dab in the middle of it all - they are also craving blood - they need it. Can they keep it a secret? Will they become full fledged vampires?

Bitten is a fast-paced easy read. But on the same token, it's also lacking some of Stine's hook and pizzazz that are in his stories for younger readers.

I enjoyed it, but it isn't in my top reads. I think it may be one of those stories that easily fades for me. Maybe my expectations were too high?

Have you been to your local library recently?

Have you been to your local library recently? If not, then go, quickly, and get your library card. I have to admit I'm a bit embarrassed that I was not a "card carrying member" either, at least UNTIL TODAY! Yes, I signed up at the local library today. And now that I'm looking at all the resources available at the library, I wonder why I didn't do this sooner.

So check this out, while at the library, look what I discovered:

1. A book discussion group in town that I'd like to join. The first book is The Road by Cormac McCarthy and I've been dying to read it.

2. Since I needed a copy of The Road, I discovered that through the library I can download a digital copy of the book (for free!) to read. Albeit, there are two people ahead of me who have reserved a copy (probably other Book Discussion Group members)...but I can dowload it right to my kindle. Nice!

3. I can even take my family to the Natural History Museum in NYC for free with a pass from the library. I just need to reserve it in advance. That is like nearly $100 in savings for a family of four! Cha-ching!

Wow - and those are the gems I've uncovered in only about an hour. Imagine what else I can discover the more I use the library.

So, go...get your library card, and found out what benefits await you.

Meanwhile, I'm heading back to the digital library to see what else I can download to my kindle.

Paring Down in 2012

With all the streams of information, it can all bit a bit overwhelming...not to mention time-sucking. In 2012, I vow to find a much more efficient way to deal with it all, to find a proper balance between writing novels and attending to all the other items like this blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

One of the things I'm toying with is updating the blog once a week, which will force me to prepare a more meaningful post each time. Also, I want to take the time to unsubscribe to all the excessive newsletters and updates I get for things I really don't have much interest in. So goodbye shopping club updates...hello fewer emails.

It's time to streamline my very limited time, and make the best use of my resources.

I'm still putting the plan together, so it's a work in progress. There has to be a proper balance, because in the end it's the writing that has to receive the most attention. Without that there is nothing.

The Time is Now

Grrrrr. I lost my momentum, and I need to get it back. Too many excuses. Too many doubts. Time to put the blinders back on and make it happen, and I don't want to wait until the new year. I can't wait for the new year. It's time to get back in the saddle and focus my writing, draft the next book, and get the current novel in the hands of the right contacts to get it on its way to publication. Now.

The time to do it is NOW.

Ok, I feel better already.

Book Review - Midnight Alley

Book Review - Midnight Alley (Morganville Vampires, book 3) by Rachel Caine

Claire Danvers is back in the third installment of Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series, and here she is getting herself into even more trouble - but isn't that what she does best? In this continuation of the series, Claire tries to keep her obligations to both Amelie (the oldest vampire and ruler of Morganville) and her friends (Eve, Michael, & Shane) but somehow the lines get blurred and she risks not only her only life but the lives of those she cares about most.

Midnight Alley reveals even more about the dark secret that haunts the vampire race, the secret that Amelie is trying to keep from everyone, including the other vampires. But Amelie has a plan, and it involves Claire; intelligence can be deadly, as Claire is soon to discover.

I like the introduction of Myrnin (an older vampire & scientist) in this book, and I'm excited to see where Rachel Caines takes this story line later on.

Recommended for young adult readers with strong adult cross-over appeal. Parent note: recommended for YA readers on the higher age range as some of the Morganville novels deal with issues better suited for the older YA reader.

Book Review - Succubus Blues

I'm not usually a fan of the hot & sexy stories that offer pure erotica and not much story line. And the whole premise of this story gave me pause. Imagine my added concern when I looked-up the definition of "succubus" on Dictionary.com:

suc·cu·bus /ˈsʌkyəbəs/ Show Spelled[suhk-yuh-buhs] Show IPAnoun, plural -bi /-ˌbaɪ/ Show Spelled[-bahy] Show IPA.1.a demon in female form, said to have sexual intercourse with men in their sleep.
2. any demon or evil spirit.

3. a strumpet or prostitute.

Yep, I thought I had this whole booked pegged, but then I started reading the reviews, many which offered insight into the storyline. It had promise. So I gave it a try, and yes, its true. This book is steamy in parts (not for kids, definitely an adult read) but it also had strong characters and a good story. And I love the fact that the whole concept is believable, in other words, the story and the characters are setup in such a way that even if there wasn't a supernatural element, their situations and problems are relatable.

This was my first Richelle Mead book, and it has made me a fan. I see now why her books are so popular.

Recommended read for adults and fans of paranormal/supernatural.

Break - Winding Down & Ramping up to Write

Breaks are important; not breaks as in "I'm breaking up with you", but breaks in terms of rest, down-time, and respite. It's a chance to recharge. And I have. I'm creatively recharged. Ready to write the next novel. Able to leap talling buildings in a single bound. Wait a minute, that's superman.

Anyway, this well-deserved writing break has me chomping at the bit to start writing again. I'm excited to start crafting the next book, Book 2 of The Energy Trilogy titled "Li". I'm ramping up to start drafting during National Novel Writing Month in 13 days. I saved book one in pdf format and loaded it to my kindle. I'm rereading it at the gym and brainstorming ideas for this next installment (which is exciting in itself because having book 1 on the kindle makes it feel more real somehow, like its already published even if its not).

This was a good break. I'm ready to start the next leg of the journey.

For me, NaNoWriMo has proven to be an effective tool for crafting first drafts in a short time, followed by many, many months of revisions.

Filling Writing Withdrawals With TV

Since finishing the novel, I've taken these last two weeks away from writing to cleanse my writing palette. I miss it. I think I'm going through writing withdrawals right now. But I need this quick break as I gear-up for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which starts November 1st.

To fill the gap, I've decided to get caught up on some of my tv watching, and let me tell you there have been a few standout shows.

First off let me say that I balled watching the season finale of The Big C. Wow! This is my absolute favorite show on tv right now. The writing is amazing and the cast is spot-on. The season finale made me cry, ball, for about 15 minutes after it was over. Did you see? If not, you have to watch. Amazing! Boo-Hiss that I now have to wait until 2012 for the new season.

The season premier of Brad Melter's Decoded happened this week, which I'm glad I caught as its another favorite show. The first episode was about uncovering the theory about what Fort Knox houses...the country's gold, or dust. Very interesting! It makes you think. The research is intelligent and entertaining at the same time. And its by a writer who I respect immensely!

And finally, after a few weeks of avoiding The X Factor, I turned it on this week...and I'm hooked. Yes, I'm a sucker for a good talent show. It inspires me in my writing, to see other artists, their journey and their struggles, and finally successes that can come from it all. It gives me hope.

So eventhough I'm missing my writing, I feel my excitement building for the next project as I tap into these amazing programs. And in just a few days, I'll start drafting my ideas in preparation for NaNoWriMo.

Book Review - The Haunted School (Goosebumps)

Another Goosebumps installment, The Haunted School is probably one of my favorites in the series so far. But I decided to do something different on this review, and ask my son his thoughts on the book, since we read it together. My son is eight and in third grade. So, what follows are his responses to my questions about the book.

What did you like about the book?

I liked the different colors {one world represented in color and the other only in black & white-Grayworld}. I like how they {Tommy & Ben} turn back to normal, the girl {Thalia} hiding her secret, and when they {the two boys} got out & looked in the mirror with a gasp.

What would you change in the story, if anything?

I would have liked to have seen the kids change into the black zombies or the dark kids sneak into the school {the good part of Grayworld} & have them try to get in to the portal of the real school. Then have Tommy turn into a zombie, and have Tommy's friend {Ben}save the world from the dark zombies taking over.

What you recommend this book to other kids?

Yes, of course! Absolutely, super duper!

It's DONE!

It's done! I now have a completed manuscript ready for submission. This has been nine years in the making, several flushed drafts, and many hours of writing, and finally its done. Woop! Woop!

Now the hard part begins. The dreaded slush pile. I've got my top agent picks and query letters are being prepared.

Fingers crossed - sending some positive into the universe.

Book Review - The Dead Girls' Dance (Morganville Vampires, Book 2)

The Dead Girls' Dance is book 2 in the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine. And this book picks up right where book one left off, which is a great way to continue, as long as you're reading one book after another (which I am). There's no lapse from one book to the next, the pacing is fast, and the story reads quickly to the end.

In this story, the plot thickens and Claire is thrown even further into the vampire world. Not only is Claire learning more about Morganville, but she is also becoming intertwined in the battle between the warring factions, both vampire and human. Claire's relationships deepen with her house-mates, and romance blossums.

Wow! Another great book by Rachel Caine - I'm hooked. This is a recommended Young Adult (YA) read with strong crossover appeal into the adult market.

Book Review - Glass Houses
by Rachel Caine

Glass Houses is the first book in the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine, about college freshman Claire Danvers and her arrival to Morganville Texas, a small college town with many secrets. Claire starts in the college dorms, but after being bullied there, she is forced to move off campus, and that's when the secrets of Morganville start revealing themselves to her.

The story revolves around vampires, but also has strong attachments to young adult themes like moving away from home, first love, and finding one's place in the world. Eventhough it is Young Adult, it has strong crossover appeal into the adult market as well.

This book is a great read that will delight fans of Twilight and Vampire Academy - highly recommended read for fans of young adult paranormal/romance.

Yay - Nearly There...thanks for sticking with me

I've been a bit spotty on the posts the last couple of weeks, and I wanted to say thank you for sticking with me. Trust me, all of my energy has been placed in a productive place; writing.

I am almost giddy because after 9 years of work, FINALLY, I can say I have a novel that feels whole and is ready for submission (nearly ready). I'm doing one final read-through and then handing it over to my husband for his final read-through. If it still feels as complete as it does now after that...then I'll actually being submitting. OMG!

So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for sticking with me. Hopefully, I'll be reporting more and more news about the progress of the novel once I start sending out the query letters, the partials, and the fulls (and keep your fingers crossed, squee!, maybe a contract somewhere in there too).

Welcome To The Other Side of the Hurricane

So we made it through. Hurricane Irene has come and gone. As you know I posted about the impending hurricane on Friday, full of speculation whether she would deliver a mighty wallop or not. So was she as predicted or was she a dud? Well, I think that will be up to interpretation. Some people are saying it was a lot of hype about nothing. While others have days of clean-up, maybe even weeks, ahead of them with flooded basements, flooded communities, property damage and power outages. So just like a book, the end judgement is up for interpretation.

In my area, we've had lot's of flooding and power outages. Even my J-O-B has lost power and isn't anticipated to regain it until the end of the week.

So yes, there's damage, but no, it's not as extensive as original predictions...let me say that again, not as extensive as ORIGINAL PREDICTIONS. We ended up with a Tropcial Storm as opposed to a Category 4 or 5 Hurrican (strictly speaking for the NY Metro area). But isn't it better that everyone was overprepared than the other way around?

Irene - Will She Deliver or Fall Short?

It hit me today, anticipating Hurricane Irene's approach is just like the anticipation of a long awaited book (without the risk of lives lost of course); you wait, and wait, and wait...and listen to all the hype, and then wonder if the end event (or book) will be all it's been hyped to be. Sometimes the books deliver, and sometimes they fall short. Will Irene deliver the projected punch? Or fall short?

I guess we'll find out tomorrow night.

I live in the projected path of where Irene will hit, but luckily not in any of the low lying areas that are requiring evacuation. I'm stocked-up and ready to weather the storm. Let's see how it all plays out. I'll let you know what happens next week.

Book Review - Night Road

Let me start by saying this...this book made me cry, not once, not twice, but four separate times. The story that unfolds in this book is touching, and emotional. We know from the beginning of the novel that something happens, something big, that affects the characters, but we don't know what. The first half of the book leads us up to that something. Here is where we meet the characters and feel attached to them.

And then we see and feel and experience the after.

The story is about three teenagers: Mia, Zach, Lexi and its also about Mia & Zach's mom Jude Farraday. There are other important characters throughout the story, but pivotal characters are those above. We get to know them, understand them individually and together and then we watch them as they endure tragedy.

As a writer, what amazes me about the way Kristin Hannah tells her story is that if feels very spontaneous. A character makes a decision and we see that decision unfold into consequence. It's not so easy to execute. A writer knows the outcome of a story, but Kristin Hannah does it, and in a way that seems both effortless & seamless. This is what makes parts of the story so heartbreaking.

I loved this book...it is on my favorites list. A highly recommended read; suitable for both adults and teens. Bravo!!!

Ideas for Novels in My Future

Years ago, when I first started thinking about writing novels as a career, I used to worry that I wouldn't have enough ideas to get me past the first novel. I thought, what if this novel is the only GREAT idea I had. And now? This morning I was driving in to work, and another great novel idea hit me. I say another, because I probably have 5-6 solid ideas to carry me through the next 5-6 novels. And that's excluding sequels to the novel I'm working on now. And every few months another fantastic idea hits me. These are not just passing fancies. No, I'm talking about the whole beginning of the novel comes to me, the exact wording of how it starts and then there's a flash and I sense the whole novel that follows. I know, it sounds weird, to sense the rest of the novel. But its a feeling, a knowing that this idea is complete, and exciting, and doable. I've drafted plots in a flurry of words, character ideas, twists, etc. Sometimes I can't write it down fast enough, like this morning. The ideas are there, ready to develop. That's the fun part.

Now I worry about finding the time to write these great novels.

Writing A Novel Is Hard

Writing is hard work. I know it probably seems like the easiest thing to do, I mean it's just putting words on paper right? It's not like a person has to lose a limb or sacrifice their freedom to write, well at least not in this country. Other places, where freedom of speech is not so free, that's a whole other story. But let's not sway from the topic. Easy peasy right; Oh my goodness, if only that were so.

One of my writing friends uses this quote on her blog, and I think it's super important to what I'm trying to convey here. Here's the quote:

“Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead." — Gene Fowler

Sometimes that's exactly what it feels like. A book is a piece of the author, whether it's autobiographical or complete fiction, it's the author's creation. I know you've probably heard it said before, like I have, that a book is like an author's baby, conceived and birthed from the author's imagination. It's true, but I'd like to take it even a step further to say sometimes that book even becomes a child. Mine is about nine years old (the book, not my son). There's nurturing and discovery and ultimately the time to let go (as in when a child leaves home).

The process of writing a book has so many steps, that its a journey of many, many years (at least in my case) There's knowing what to say, to also knowing how to say it. And both can be just as painstaking to complete. Right now, I'm working on revisions of a novel that I've completely rewritten twice already, and now I'm just trying to exact the language in this final version so that it's complete (at least until an editor gets hold of it). It's a feeling, mostly. I'm striving for a smile on my own face when I read the words. Yes, I know what's coming, but when the words perfectly convey the idea, that's a great moment.

I'm in the final push, and I have my own writing retreat coming up over the next two weekends. I'll be locking myself inside, with my laptop, to push to the end. The goal is to finish the novel, finally after 9 years of working on it. It's been a journey of discovery for me. This novel will always be special because it's where I've found my voice and learned so much about the writing process. And there's still so much more to learn. I'm ready for the next chapter.

Book Review - Angelfire

Book Review - Angelfire
by Courtney Allison Moulton

Angelfire had a good, solid story with a kick-ass, no nonsense main character who is just understanding her true potential as a warrior against evil. I liked the unique take on angels and demons and the evils that go bump in the night. It was an easy read with action, a budding romance, and lot's of evil monster-type characters closing in.

On the downside, I felt the story was missing a couple things for me. First, it needed a stronger emotional connection to the outlying characters. Ellie, the main character, is well-defined, as is Will, but the supporting characters are less so. Second, Ellie was constantly asking questions both of herself and of others, which got a bit annoying after awhile for me. I wish the author had found different ways to unfold the answers of her past and of this world instead of always relying on her asking questions.

All in all this debut novel was an interesting read. I think YA Paranormal romance fans will enjoy this story.

Space Camp - Kids & Adults

I was watching Mars Needs Mom on Sunday with my son. It sparked a conversation about space travel & astronauts. My son was excited about jumping around weightless on the moon, and that led to a discussion about Space Camp. I knew it existed, but I didn't know much more than that. So I checked it out. Let me tell you, I want to go. They don't just have Space Camp for kids now, there are programs for families and for adults. This is going on my bucket list.

Book Review - Before I Fall

Book Review - Before I Fall
by Lauren Oliver

I had really high expectations of this book when I started it. For one, I really LOVED Lauren Oliver's second book, Delirium. And two, this was a New York Times Bestseller. With that said, the book is well-written and I was captivated by how Sam (Samantha), the main character, evolves in each new restart of the same day that she is forced to live. Think of it as the movie GroundHog Day, but for a young adult audience.

Before I Fall is a good solid read with good characters, but I didn't find it amazing, and I can't put my finger on exactly why. Maybe I was just expecting too much? Maybe I've seen the whole "GroundHog Day" scenario a few times before and I wanted a different plot than that? I'm not sure exactly.

I will say that it takes a skilled writer to create a character, like Sam, who in the beginning is the one you want to hate, and turn the story around so that you're rooting for her, genuinely. That is not easy to do, and Lauren does it here.

I think this is probably a unique concept to most YA readers who might not have been exposed to the movie GroundHog Day or other adult literature that deals with this same plot, and because of that, YA readers find this story so compelling. For readers unfamiliar with the movie Groundhog Day, I've included the trailer from this 1993 film below.

Book Review - The DUFF

The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend)...I didn't want to like this book, I really didn't. I picked it up for $5.00 at a used book store. I had heard the title touted as a must-read by the publisher before it was released, in a webinar awhile back. And when I saw it at the bookstore, I was curious. So I bought it.

When I started it, at first, I wasn't sure if I'd really get into it. It's definitely geared for teens (it is YA after all) in language and topic, where sex is as commonplace as going to school. BUT, and this is a big but, once I got into it I was hooked. I stayed up late and got up early to see how all the drama panned out. And I liked it, a lot! The story curved around nicely to a place where the main characters change from superficial to real people, as they come to realize who they are through the drama.

Recommended read for YA fans, but due to the some of the language and content I would suggest this for older YA readers only.

Book Review - Divergent

Book Review - Divergent

When I first started Divergent, I was concerned & unsure if this dystopian story would offer something new and unique, but my concerns were soon proven unfounded. This book is good, really good. When you start reading, give it a few chapters to simmer in your brain, and I promise the story will start to grow on you. It did for me, and then I couldn't put it down! 486 pages goes really fast. At the end, I wanted more story. Lucky for me this is the first book in a planned trilogy - yippee!

Divergent follows the main character, Beatrice, as she maneuvers her way through discovering her place in a dystopian version of Chicago, choosing a faction to align herself to, and ultimately uncovering much more than she bargained for. This story is a fast read with both action and romance.

Highly recommended for YA readers (14 and above) with great crossover appeal for the adult market as well.

Book Review - Forever

Book Review - Forever by Maggie Stiefvater

This is the best book in the series! I was glued right down to the last page. Maggie Stiefvater did an amazing job of bringing this series to a close in Forever.

For those who haven't read any of the previous books, The Wolves of Mercy Falls series is about wolves, yes, but not a typical werewolf story. In Maggie Stiefvater's series there's a real sense of the people in the story, the characters both as humans and as wolves. The driving crux of the story is more about the love between Sam and Grace, Isabel and Cole, what happens to Olivia, and Grace's split from her family than it is about a crazy wolf running around trying to kill people (typical werewolf scenario). There's also a real connection with wolves here, a kindness and respect.

There's a lot going on. But it's all handled masterfully by Maggie Stiefvater. I was content with how it all ended and didn't feel like there were any nagging loose ends. It felt exactly right. Bravo!

Highly recommended read for young adult readers. High cross-over appeal for adult readers as well.

Tools for Taking Notes While Reading

I've been looking for a more effective way to jot notes when I'm reading physical books. It's easy on my kindle because I can type up notes and bookmark sections of text. When I'm reading physical books I don't usually think to grab a piece of paper to jot notes...particularly when I know I'll be writing up a review at the end. So after some research, here are some helpful tools to use in jotting notes while reading. I hope they help you too.

Here's another option, a Post-it Flag Marker where you can mark the page and jot tiny notes on the flag (or flag notes on the page). These are available from most office supply stores, but here's a link to Staples where I found the information: Post-it Flag Marker.

Book Review - The Boxcar Children

I have to admit, I had never before heard of The Boxcar Children before this year, when a co-worker talked about it as being a book she remembered from her childhood. So, I was curious to see what it was all about, and if it might be something my 7 year-old son might be interested in. Then I saw the name pop-up on Netgalley. So I downloaded it.

My son LOVED it! He wants me to get more Boxcar Children books. And I enjoyed it too. This first book is quaint, but intriguing. It's a fun story that incorporates children's curiosity, adventure, danger, and strong bonds between these children. The writing is simple and easy, so my son has no problem reading it on his own, but it's also the kind of story that I enjoy reading to him as well. The messages hidden in the pages are also good for our kids to hear. We see these kids as hardworkers, and loyal; not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty for the love and survival of each other.

I highly recommend this book for young readers.

Harry Potter - Amazing, As Expected!

Yes, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows-Part 2 was amazing. It racked in a whopping $169.2 million dollars. Would anyone expect less than stellar results from the finale to this epic story?

I went to watch it on Saturday, and I found myself reliving the book I had read years ago. And it reminded me how well crafted the story really is. I don't ever remember reading the series and thinking "that's a bit much" or "whatever happened to...". Every plot line worked. Every word seemed perfectly placed, and written in very simple prose. No gaps in storyline.

And to think, this is all from a single mother who had an idea one day, and worked on that idea for years before it finally got published. Hats off to you J.K. Rowling. It's been fun reading and watching Harry Potter for all these years.

Book Review - Passion by Lauren Kate

This series by Lauren Kate has been a solid three star rating for me so far, except this book fell a little short. I would have preferred to cut most of the travelling-through-time scenes and opted for a little more text that delved into the higher meaning of the curse between Luce and Daniel. I just felt stringed along for most of the book. That is just my opinion. Online, I see that there are plenty of people who really enjoyed exploring this history between Luce and Daniel. I was just hoping for more answers, answers to questions that have been left open for most of the series. But then again, we do have the next book, Rapture, to look for those. And yes, I'll be reading the last book, because I'm just dying to know how all of this gets pulled together in the end. Call me a sucker for unfinished love stories, particularly ones between a human and an angel.

It's here - the final movie in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. I've been looking forward to this for some time. It's exciting but also a bit sad too. Yes, I've read the books, I know how the story ends, I know what will happen when I go to watch it, but there's a finality about a series coming to an end like this. That's where the sadness is, in seeing such a magical story, end.

Writers do a lot of sitting. And sometimes snacking as work. Which doesn't bode well for our waistlines or our physical health. Writers are immobile for long stretches, not moving our bodies much except for our fingers. So it's important for those of us that are writers to make sure that we are also adding exercise to our schedules.
For years, I would have told you that I didn't have time to exercise. I would
have used the argument that time at the gym was time away from working on my next masterpiece. Actually, I did say that to my husband on many occasions. PHOOEY! - I say now. It's all just talk. For the last few months I have proven myself wrong. Not only am I still writing everyday, but I'm also going to the gym 5 days per week. I'm making time to get myself healthy.

So I would encourage all my friends to do the same, writers and non-writers alike. We all want to be around a long time, don't we?!

Here's a great place to start if you need a little motivation: Presidential Active Lifestyle Award. This is an excellent program that helps you set goals, log-in your progress, and actually qualify for an award. Or if you are already super active, try the Presidential Champions program. For me, it's help reinvigorated my exercise motivation...hope it helps you too!

Book Review - Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Ok, I think I've found my next favorite author. Lauren Oliver's writing is descriptive, emotional, and yet reads quickly. I was drawn to Delirium almost as much as I was drawn to the Twilight series (different Young Adult (YA) genres, but same feeling of wanting to read the story straight through to the end).

Delirium is a YA story about a dystopian world similiar to ours but different in one major way. Love is forbidden. Actually it's considered a disease, and everyone is "cured" of the disease as teenagers. It's mandated by the government. The majority of society are lobotomized adults with little emotion, prearranged marriages, and fixed lives. The main character is Lena, a girl nearing her procedure to be cured. But soon her world is turned upside down, and everything she grew up believing is now flipped around, all starting when she meets a boy named Alex.

I have to admit one thing. When I saw that the book was nearing the end, I was confused because the action and tension were heightening and yet the story just kept building...and then it ended, abruptly. I was like, what? And then I was a bit angry because I thought, "That's it? What happens next?" But lucky for us we live in a society where I could jump online and do some research. And now it makes sense, because this is book one of a planned trilogy. I let out a sigh of relief, and my anger turned to excitement. This is definitely a book that needed to be more than just one book, the full story needed to be told, and there are so many unanswered questions. Do don't despair when you get to the end. There's more coming!

Book Review - The Gray Wolf Throne

Another GREAT book by Cinda Williams Chima! The Gray Wolf Throne is book three in The Seven Realms Series, but not the final book, so it is definitely a transition book. It continues the story where book two left off, with more page-turning twists and a deeper immersion into the story of all our favoriate characters: Raisa, Han, Amon, The Bayars, and all the other major characters.

I loved the book, but just hate having to wait for the next book to see how it all plays out. This is a must read if you've started the series. The Gray Wolf Throne is scheduled to be released 8/30/11.

Recommendation: As this is a continuation in storyline, I highly recommend reading books one and two in the series, before picking up this book.

Young Adult, fantasy, good for boys and girls, strong adult crossover appeal.

Book Review - The Zero Game

by Brad Meltzer

This book is a fast-paced political thriller filled with so many details it's almost a lesson in the ins & outs of Capital Hill at the same time. Loved, loved, loved this book, and I can tell I am now going to pick up more Brad Meltzer books in the future.

Not only is this book fast-paced, it is also unpredictable. What you think will happen is flipped around, always keeping the reader guessing, which makes you want to read even more!

I would say this is like a John Grisham novel, but with more political bend and many more well-researched details incorporated into the story.

I highly recommend this to fans of Grisham & Baldacci, but also to anyone interested in a great story filled with adventure, action, and strong characters. Adult mass market fiction, but also appropriate for teen readers as well.

Reading War-Juggling Two Great Books at One Time

It really is a reading war at this point. I have two great books that I'm reading at the same time, and it's amazing to see how drawn I am to both, but let me back it up first and explain how I got to this point.

So, as you probably already know from following the blog, I've been hooked on Cinda Williams Chima's Seven Realms series. And I'm fortunate to have access to an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of her forthcoming third book in the series titled, The Gray Wolf Throne. (I LOVE NetGalley for that...the book doesn't come out until August and I'm reading it now - so cool! And I'm LOVING the book, by the way.) So, I'm reading The Gray Wolf Throne, but it's a digital ARC version that I can't get to my kindle, I have to read it on my laptop. I don't have time to read at my desk, I do most of my reading right before bed or at the gym. The Gray Wolf Throne became my before-bed reading.

So that's book one, now on to book number two. I needed a second book, because I couldn't prop the laptop on the treadmill while I'm exercising (nor would I want to). So I needed one of my kindle books to fit the bill, and that's when I chose, "The Zero Game" by Brad Meltzer. I discovered Brad Meltzer not from his books, but from his series on The History Channel: Brad Meltzer's Decoded. And that led me to download one of his books to my kindle. I was curious. The book sat in my TO READ pile for a few months. And then I needed a gym-read. My finger hovered over The Zero Game as I was scrolling through trying to decide what to choose. Starting a book by an unfamiliar author can be hit or miss; I love Brad Meltzers show, but would I really enjoy his books? I am so glad I decided to give his books a try, because this book so far is a political thriller that is very hard to put down. Let me put it this way, when I'm reading this book at the gym, I've actually stayed extra a couple times already without realizing it because I was so into the book.

So now I'm reading two completely different books, and although I have defined times to read each, I will admit there are moments when I want to cross-over to the other title. They are both fighting for my attention.

Who would have thought that I'd be reading two books that were equally as good?

The Ever Fleeting Muse

Yesterday, I was hit with inspiration for a new poem. The lines of the poem were coming one after another. It was deep, insightful, and the words fit perfectly. The only problem was that I was driving as it hit. I pulled into the parking lot, with seconds left on my lunch break, and vowed to write it all down the second I was able to.

I got distracted.

The poem never got written.

And now it's lost.

I should have pulled over and written it as the words flowed, because now as I try to recreate the poem, nothing is coming. Instead of sounding deep and moving, now it just sounds cheesy.

Chalk it up to another lesson in writing, do whatever it takes to write the words down when the muse is present. Otherwise the words will be lost forever.

For Favs, I Covet Actual Books

I think traditional books will be around for a very long time. I love my kindle, but there's also something about holding an actual book that none of the e-readers can replace. That's my feeling anyway. For the books that are on the top of my favorites list, I make sure I have actual copies of the book. Here's a perfect example; yesterday I wrote about my bookstore stop on Friday night. Two of the books I bought are ones that I had already read, but I had read borrowed copies. It's been bugging me that I don't have them on my bookshelf at home (it would be the same if I had read e-copies). I coveted the actual books, so I bought them.

On Friday night, after eating at Benny Tudino's Pizzeria in Hoboken N.J., I discovered a hidden gem of a bookstore on main street called Symposia. It's just a short distance from Carlo's Bakery, the famous location where Cake Boss is filmed.
Anyway, if you know me at all, you know that when I walk into a bookstore I always come out with something. And this time I came out with an armload full of books. This bookstore is great because the shelves are lined with amazing titles at amazing prices...soft covers for $5 and hard covers for $6 (at least for the books I was looking at). And I'm SO excited, because I found copies of both A Thousand Splendid Suns AND The Kite Runner, both of which I've already read but I had read borrowed copies. Now I have copies of my own!

Book Review - The Exiled Queen

The Exhiled Queen is the second book in Cinda Williams Chima's Seven Realms series. The story picks up where book one (The Demon King) left off, and readers are immediately thrown into the action. New characters are introduced and previous favorites are developed even more here.

I raved about The Demon King, and the Exhiled Queen is even better.

I am in love with the characters, who are each strong and well-defined. The story is flawless and full of twists and turns that keep the reader turning page after page to find out what happens next.

Loved, loved, loved this book!

Recommendation: As this is a continuation in storyline, I highly recommend ready book one, The Demon King, before picking up this book.

Book Review - The Demon King

Yes, yes, yes! The Demon King is a perfect example of what a young adult fantasy novel should be. Cinda Williams Chima has written a story that flows seamlessly, with several storylines developing at the same time, intertwined in a way that is organic and fast-paced. I loved the characters who are strong but flawed, powerful yet make mistakes. This story is easy to read, and although it comes in at 506 pages, once you start reading the story ends before you know it.

A warning...this story is by far finished at the end of the novel. It is obviously the first book in a series, so be prepared to want to run out and get the next book.

Recommended read for young adult fans of fantasy. Good for boys and girls.

River Cleanup 2011

Here's a picture of me at a local river cleanup this weekend; doing my part to help keep the parks clean. The weather was perfect and a nice sized crowd showed-up. Lot's and lot's of garbage was pulled out of the woods and from the river bank. It's amazing how much glass winds up on the shore, and a shame that so many people find it easy to throw their garbage outside instead of into the garbage cans.

I took my son with me for the second year in a row. I wish all kids (and parents alike) had that same kind of enthusiasm that he has for keeping the world clean.

It's a small effort, but it's those small efforts that collectively add up to significant impacts on the environment. I'm glad I participated, and can't wait to do it again real soon.

Book Review - Jane Eyre

It's interesting to reread a book that you haven't picked up in years and compare how the memory of it stands-up to the reread. Jane Eyre didn't disappoint; it's a classic for a reason. My one strongest memory of the book from the original read was the storyline between Jane and Mr. Rochester. THAT was what I remembered most, and the storyline I looked forward to reading. I forgot how much happens to Jane throughout the novel that is disconnected to that storyline. It was almost like I was reading it for the first time!

The impetus for picking up Jane Eyre again, nearly twenty three years after the first read, was to cleanse my Young Adult (YA) reading palette. Jane Eyre was YA, long before YA was even a genre. What I love about the way Charlotte Bronte writes is that every word is perfect. Her sentences are beautifully written, elegant, and spot-on perfect. Yes, there are societal differences between then and now, but the essence of the characters are timeless.

Loved the reread! Most definitely recommended for YA and Adult readers alike.

Did A Whole Week Go By?

Sorry I've been absent from the blog for the last week. Phew, what a week of juggling! All the things that I thought I had nicely balanced on my plate, suddenly started crashing down, mainly fueled by some new responsibilities that have sucked the life out of me. BUT on a good note, even through the challenges of the last week, I've been super inspired and making incredible headway on my revisions; every day brings me one step closer to completing the manuscript. Now THAT is exciting!

End of the Week Musings...6-6-11

Ok, I have to admit it...last week I didn't do any writing and I didn't go to the gym. Yikes! (nail biting in process). BUT the good news is THIS week I got back in line, gave myself a much needed pep-talk, and did both. (phew)

Wednesday was jury duty day. Did you know jury duty can be a great place to get writing done AND for people watching? I did both! The day was basicly hours upon hours of waiting. I went prepared with a bag full of stuff including a copy of my manuscript. I got through several pages of revisions and it was a great boost in progress.

And the gym - man was I tired this week, and so not in the mood for the gym, but I went anyway. I'm so glad I did. Exercise has a way of revitalizing and supporting creative flow. Feels good to say "I did it" - even when I really wasn't into it.

So all in all it was a great week. And now that the weekend is here, I'm hoping for two solid early morning writing session. Let's see where I end up on the other side of the weekend.

Guest Post - Typewriter Era Comes To An End

With the explosion in computer use some years ago, it seemed that the typewriter joined the annals of antiquated inventions like the rotary phone, the horse buggy and the Sony Walkman.

Now it looks as though the era of the typewriter has finally come to an end. According to an article from the Daily Mail Reporter, the world's last typewriter factory has closed its doors. Godrej and Boyce, a Mumbai, India-based company, shut its doors with only 200 typewriters left in stock.

It may be a shocker to see that there are people in the world still using typewriters, but sometimes it's easy to forget that there are some parts of the world that are not as advanced as other countries. From the article:

Although typewriters became obsolete years ago in the west, they were still common in India - until recently. Demand for the machines has sunk in the last ten years as consumers switch to computers.

Reading this article reminded me of an antiquated typewriter I owned, bestowed upon me by my father at nine, after I had openly declared my dreams of becoming a writer. I pounded out many poems on that typewriter. Years before my father even married my mother, my father took a crack at the publishing industry by banging out a novel on the device.

I don't know the typewriter's model (I was a kid; I wouldn't have pay attention to stuff like that), but I remember that it was grey, and the keys were hard to punch. At the rate I type now (which is 79 wpm -- no lie), the keys sticking together would hinder my typing speed (and thus my progress) and make me feel uncomfortable. The machine's case came in a beige, dry leather case; it had a pocket I stuffed unused and typed-up papers in.

Nostalgia came over me tonight while I was at work, and I decided to look for that typewriter. I figured it would be crammed deep into the coat closet in my living room. As soon as I got home, I cleared out the front of the coat closet (what with its deep storage space and all) and peered deep into the closet for the familiar case. My mother asked me why I was clearing out the closet, and I told her the reason. She said the typewriter got thrown out. What a shame. It would have been nostalgic of me to look at that typewriter, to try typing on it, and maybe even show my daughter the computer's predecessor. And I was going to find out the machine's model so I could have put that information in this post.

Here's a nifty idea, Kickstarter. You can utilize it as a place to generate funding for your project. Got a book you want to publish but don't have the funds? Put your idea up and promote it to get the funds you need to realize the project. There is even a tab specifically for writing and publishing! So browse around see what creative products lie in wait.

Here's how the Kickstarter website defines their site:

"Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. Every month, tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields."

You can also pledge funds to projects that are already posted and help other artists realize their dreams.

BEA features Big Children's Books

People-Watching

I love to "people-watch". I could sit for hours observing people, gleening characteristics for future use in my writing. But it even goes deeper than that. People are complicated, and watching how others act and react is a bit of uncovering what makes us all human.
Even though I'll never know every intimate detail of the people I observe, I can gleen an essence in that moment, and sometimes it's those moments that spark stories and characters.

My favorite people watching location this week was on Tuesday. My son had early dismissal from school and our tradition on such days is to grab lunch at McDonalds. Not healthy, I know, but it's a treat. So this week, the local McDonalds was filled with high-schoolers, and since I write YA, observing teenagers is key. I got some good material and was reminded how different the teenage world is; it really is a world unto itself. I got some good slang (had to cover my son's ears a couple times) and watched some interesting interactions. Good stuff, good stuff.

The Finish Line?

The finish line feels so far away. I am so close to completing my current manuscript and I just feel like the closer I get the further the finish line pushes ahead. Am I alone in this feeling? I feel like I just need a solid week of non-stop writing and maybe I could crack the ceiling that's holding me back from getting this done. Maybe this upcoming weekend break from the regular schedule will help me break through it. Oh I surely hope so!

Reading a Book in Character

My son brought home a book today from his school library, Davy Crockett, The Legendary Frontiersman by James Howard Kunstler. Wow-what a strong voice this book has, it was so easy to slip into a southern drawl while I was reading it to him; which made reading the story to him so much fun! My acting background came into play immediatly. And I think it made the material come to life for my son too.

Music & Books - Telling a Story

I've been listening to a lot of music lately, mostly on my phone while I'm at the gym. Pandora has become my new best friend, and I love being able to thumbs-up and thumbs-down each song that comes up, tayloring my radio stations to what I like. The act of rating my music has made me pay close attention to why I'm doing it; what draws me in, what repels me.

And here's where commonality comes into play. Good music and good books have a lot in common.

A song needs to tell a story just as much as a book, and it also needs to evoke emotion and be relatable. Even in music, the words in a song are just as important as the melody, at least to me. The experience in both listening to music and reading a book is also influenced by what we bring to it, as well as the message the storyteller is trying to convey.

Interesting, interesting indeed. I think I need to keep paying attention to the music that I'm drawn, to keep exploring how my likes and dislikes there might also lead to more understanding in my writing. You just never know where the next epiphany will come from and I want to be opened to any and all.

General end-of-week musings 4-15-11

So I needed a break from modern YA reading and picked up a favorite classic that I've been meaning to reread, Jane Eyre. As I read, I'm reminded why I love this book so much. There isn't one word out of place. Every word is exact, and natural, and beautiful. This is what well-written literature should strive to be. And not only that, but it is engaging at the same time. This book is cleansing my reading palate; exactly what I needed!

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I've started going to the gym. It's been over a month, and the act of getting to the gym has now become a habit. And it feels great! BUT, and there is a big but here, I've dropped some of the consistancy in my writing. So now I need to somehow find balance with the two. I'm hoping that I can work to find that balance over the next few weeks.

I realized last night that I'm itching to work on some new material, but there are about 30 pages of my current manuscript that still stand unready. I need to push through and get this manuscript done, so I can refresh my writing palate with some new stuff. So, that is my focus, to push through and finish this final revision and finally get it out for submission and then move on to something new. At least until it comes time for more rewrites. :)
